Jeff Kearns

I first met Jeff Kearns at a Halloween party roughly 20 years ago, and from the first moment I met him I knew he was a rad dude. At the time I, along with a few close associates, had just relocated to St.Paul from the Fargo/Moorhead area. We didn’t know many people in St. Paul or Minneapolis back then, so a Halloween costume party seemed like the perfect venue to make some new acquaintances. Our crew all dressed up like clowns and armed with booze and candy, we set forth to make some friends.

While we were largely met with confusion and caution by many of the party-goers (in hindsight clown costumes may have been a bit off putting), Jeff was welcoming and cool right from the start. He had a calm vibe and exuded a mellow pleasantness that was both friendly and chill. In an act of solidarity, he graciously accepted a red clown nose from us and willingly donned it as an honorary member of our clown gang.

Probably not surprisingly, we came to know that Jeff shared many of the same interests as we did, including music and skating. Jeff was a long time musician having played in the Minneapolis band the Hang Ups for many years and would later form and lead the awesome band Deep Pool. No wonder we all got along so well. We went on to be fast friends with Jeff and hung out a bunch over the following years, playing shows, having beers, and skating hills.

It’s been so great to have Jeff involved in basement sketches now, so we can continue to share music and be part of a creative community together. His mastery of song structure, recording techniques, and musicianship shines through in every one of his submissions.
