Project 32: Guns N Roses - Appetite for Destruction

Welcome to the Jungle

It’s So Easy
By Randy Dever

I used the word "ditz" in place of "bitch" found in the original due to strong personal convictions.

Night Train

Outta Get Me
By Kelly Duclos

I happened upon the idea for this version almost 25 years ago when I first got my banjo so I was excited to have the opportunity to do up a full blown take on it. The recording features some dirty solos played on my Hutchinson pawn shop Les Paul, a nod to Mr. Slash.

Mr. Brownstone
By Daniel Jöst

This time the song was very familiar to me. It propably helped me to get it finished. It only took a day this time, so the quality and mixing could be better. But it rocks, I think. Initially I wanted to do it more like a folk song, a bit Pavement-like, slow. But then time ran out and in order to record it without having to practice too much, I set my DAW project to 60 bpm, played all the stuff as properly as I could and cranked it up to 110 bpm afterwards. Cheating? I don't care. I'm still humble. I learned that I have to practice a lot to double the maximum speed of my solo guitar playing to catch up with Zappa.

My Michelle
By Andrew Charon

This was a tough one, it took a long time for me to find a direction. I even attempted to do a version of My Michelle on the Omnichord but it didn’t work out….but I built some momentum and ended up with this. Enjoy.

Think About You

Synth Child O Mine
By Bill Fricke

Ah, the notorious guitar riff that has been banned forever in most guitar stores. The video we all saw a million times on MTV.  I asked for this song because it is one of the only GnR songs I know. Never listened to the whole album until recently.  Because I’m old.

I originally was trending toward a slowed down, guitar heavy version, using the band Luna’s cover (which is wonderful) as a springboard.  Also, thinking of the band Low.

Worked on it for a bit. It was coming along nicely.  Then, I thought Synthesizers.  Being an 80’s boy, what about a pseudo dancy synth version?  I’m not Slash. I will never be as good as Slash. I can’t solo like Slash.  I did learn the infamous intro in guitar. But the soloing was too much

So, synths, chimey guitars, drum machines, fake Simmons drums, and synth solos it became

I got to use my Talk Box pedal, which was fun but it’s super noisy, but it adds the Axl rasp for later in the song.

It’s fun. It’s a little silly.  But what’s what Basement Sketches is for.
